Every re-save and every trip through a messaging app or social network compresses a JPG again. The first file the camera, designer or client produced is always the best one to trace.
Drop It In; The Cleanup Is Automatic
JPGs are cleaned before tracing: photos and illustrations are denoised, and flat art such as logos gets an edge-preserving pass so thin strokes survive. There is no setting to find.
Remove The Background If You Need A Cut-Out
A JPG cannot store transparency, so a white background is real white pixels. Use Remove Background in the workspace to drop it, then check the result on the Checker preview background.
Tidy The Colours
Compression leaves faint colour variations along edges. Tidy Colours merges the near-duplicates, and typing an exact number into Colors keeps a two-colour logo at two colours.

Why JPG Artifacts Turn Into Extra Paths
JPEG compresses the picture in small square blocks and approximates the colours inside each one. Around sharp edges that leaves faint halos and blotches. A tracer that took them at face value would draw each one as its own tiny shape, which is why the cleanup runs first.
A Screenshot Can Beat The JPG
If the artwork is a logo on a website, a PNG screenshot of it at full size is often cleaner than the site's own JPG, because a screenshot is lossless. Just capture it as large as the page will show it.
Photos Are A Different Job
