If yours was saved lossily, those artifacts are already in the pixels. Converting it to PNG first does not remove them — it just makes a bigger file with the same damage. The only real fix is a better source.

Use The WebP You Have
There is no need to convert it to PNG or JPG first. Re-saving adds nothing, and saving as JPG makes it worse. Drop the WebP straight in.
If You Can, Get The Original Instead
A WebP saved from a website has usually been compressed by that site's image optimiser. If the artwork is yours, the original PNG or design file will trace cleaner. If it is all you have, it will still work.
Check Transparency On The Checker Background
WebP can carry a transparent background, and it is kept through the trace. Switch Preview Background to Checker to confirm the empty areas are still empty.
Tidy Colours Around The Edges
A lossy WebP leaves slight colour noise along edges. Tidy Colours merges near-identical shades, and you can type the exact number of colours your artwork uses.

WebP can be saved either way. Lossless keeps every pixel exact, like PNG. Lossy trades detail for size, like JPG. The file does not say which it is, but an image downloaded from a busy website is almost always lossy.

The pre-trace denoise pass runs for JPG files only. A lossy WebP is traced as it is, which is why an original, uncompressed source makes a visible difference for this format.
